My dream
When my child was still a baby I found a wonderful podcast that changed our life drastically for the better and slowly put a dream into my head.
It was the 1000 hours outside podcast by Ginny Yurich.
At the time we lived in a big city and always when we went to the park, I could see how being in nature improved my child’s wellbeing. But it took moving to the countryside on Bornholm to really start seeing him thrive. But one thing keeps being hard: Finding other kids to meet outside, on a regular basis, in every weather.
That made me start to dream about a place, where neurodivergent children of different ages could get together. A place where they know the rules, they know the place and the routines, everything feels predictable and safe, they get to play freely in nature with the parents nearby (or can be dropped of, depending on how independent they are) and they can play there rain or shine, in all seasons. A place where they can feel truly safe - no dogwalkers or other people outside of that “safe circle” and the people who join will become a group where we know each other.
At the same time I have been thinking of the parents. Especially the single mums. With a neurodivergent child life is so different and so much harder to live in the way our society sees as normal. This feels especially true in the school holidays. While kids and parents will be talking about where they will spend the time, the single mums might not be able to go anywhere. Maybe because of money. Maybe because many places are just too unpredictable to spend your money on traveling there, only to stay in an awfully impersonal hotelroom, trying to get your kids through the day.
I started dreaming of crowdfunding a space where single mums with neurodivergent kids can have free holidays in a comfortable, safe and quiet place. Bornholm with it’s nature and slower life is the perfect spot for that.
So why not combine those two dreams into one!? That is what I am aiming for with this page. I am just starting out here - reading about options for crowdfunding and nonprofit organisations and learning how I can make this dream come true with the help of my sewing.
I need a house with an extra apartment or two and with a little bit of land. If I can accomplish that, I can make this happen. For my child. For other neurodivergent kids here on the island. And for other single mums who really want and need a break, but simply cannot afford it. A safe haven where children and their mums can thrive.
