Welcome to Bornholm

Dear Reader, my name is Katharina, I was born in 1986 in Germany and I am the face behind “Light of Bornholm”.

In 2022, my then 3 year old son and I went on a big adventure: housesitting on Bornholm. We had never been on this island before, but instantly fell in love. When the ferry had left Germany behind, I felt as if the fog had lifted and I was immersed in the beautiful light of Bornholm. I didn't know it then, but the actual light on the island and also the light in the hearts of the people that started coming into our life, would become my own personal lighthouse, my own light in the dark.

After that holiday it was clear to me, that we could not keep living in one of Germany's biggest cities. My son is autistic and despite being in completely new terrain, his symptoms were so much better in that Bornholm-holiday, than they ever were before in his life.

So I made the life changing decision to move abroad. While this is certainly never easy, it is especially hard when you do it with very little money, an autistic child and no support whatsoever.

I had to get creative – I tried finding and creating a job, online and offline, and ended up being a self-employed cleaner - mostly in the beautiful summerhouses here on the island.

But in the end of 2025 my right arm told me that it was time for a change. What first seemed to be “just” being overworked, has now been painfully going on for several months and forced me yet again to get even more creative. There is not much work you can do, if your main arm isn't doing so well and responds negatively to a big variety of movements.

What first seemed a scary development for our future – I am the sole breadwinner in our little family after all – lead me to jumping into one of my biggest dreams: I set up my own sewing business. I had learned how to sew as a child but in busy mum-life this hobby had taken a backseat.

But now was the time to dust myself off (and my sewing machine) and take yet another leap of faith.

In honour to everything we received on this beautiful island, I decided to call my business “Light of Bornholm”. May my products give you a small piece of the light and beauty that you find here on the island, so that you can carry it's memory with you everywhere you go.
